May 12th Fibromyalgia Awareness Day
Fibromyalgia is a real disease. I acquired it after being bitten by a tick while hiking. I was a very active and healthy full-time student working toward my doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine. As a single mom to 3 little ones I also worked full-time. After being bitten, within 3 weeks I ended up in the ER for the first time in my 40+ years. Strange symptoms started like skin eruptions, excessive fatigue, arthritis-type joint pain, heart arrhythmia, loss of mental concentration and more.
I continued to work for several years until I became very ill. I saw numerous doctors(about 10) and was diagnosed with everything from MS to lupus to tick-borne relapsing fever. None of the diagnoses were correct. Finally, four years later I was correctly diagnosed with Lyme disease, was treated with multiple antibiotics, but to no avail. So, I treated myself naturally for quite some time. Two years after the Lyme diagnosis I was told I would never work again because I had “chronic myofascial pain” ~~same thing as fibro.
Here’s some of the current information from Mayo clinic on fibromyalgia. Hopefully, it will help you if you know someone with the disease. (BTW: The Lord has used my affliction for His glory and I will always know that He cares for me daily. My time here, in this fleshy body, in temporary… and someday I will be completely restored to the perfect physical me with a new body. I praise Him daily for His glorious gift of salvation and the promises of our eternity with Him!!)
Fibromyalgia (pronounced fy-bro-my-AL-ja) is a common and complex chronic pain disorder that affects people physically, mentally and socially. Fibromyalgia is a central nervous system illness and is also referred to as a syndrome rather than a disease. Unlike a disease, which is a medical condition with a specific cause or causes and recognizable signs and symptoms, a syndrome is a collection of signs, symptoms, and medical problems that tend to occur together but are not related to a specific, identifiable cause.
Fibromyalgia, which has also been referred to as fibromyalgia syndrome, fibromyositis and fibrositis, is characterized by chronic widespread pain, multiple tender points, abnormal pain processing, sleep disturbances, fatigue and can be accompanied by psychological distress that comes with all chronic illnesses. For those with severe symptoms, fibromyalgia can be extremely debilitating and interfere with basic daily activities.
Whether you have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia or suffer from its symptoms, or have a family member or friend with the disorder, this section is designed to provide you with a better understanding of this chronic pain disorder that affects millions of people worldwide.
