Living Between the Steps

There’s a built-in danger in goal setting.  What is it?  It’s believing we’ll only be happy when we reach those goals. We tell ourselves; “When I graduate, get married, have children, own my own home, etc, ” so we keep postponing LIFE!

A university professor tells of being invited to speak at a military base and meeting an unforgettable soldier name Robert at the airport.  After they introduced themselves they headed toward the baggage claim.  As they walked down the concourse Robert kept disappearing, once to help an elderly woman whose suitcase had fallen open, once to life up two toddlers so they could watch a jet take-off, and again to give directions to someone who was lost.  Each time he came back with a big smile on his face.

“Where did you learn to live like that?” the professor asked.  “Oh,” Robert responded, “During the war I guess”.  Then he told the professor about his last tour of duty, how it was his job to detect mines, and how he watched as his friends were blown up right before his eyes, one after another.  “I learned to live between the steps, ” he said.  “I never knew whether the next step would be my last.  So, I learned to get everything I could out of the moment between when I picked up my foot and put it down again.  Every step I took was a new a whole new world, and I guess I’ve been living that way ever since.”  Robert had it right! 

To get the most out of living we must live by Scripture.

In Psalm 118 David rejoices!  In verses 21-24 he rejoices  “I will praise You, For You have answered me, And have become my salvation. The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone.  This was the Lord’s doing; It is marvelous in our eyes.  This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.”
Jesus said in Matthew 6: 25-34 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?  Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?  Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?  So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin;  and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.  Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?  Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’  For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.  But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.  Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things.  Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

This is in remembrance of my 18 year old grandson RJ.  About 10 days ago he was driving around with two of his friends.  I don’t know what they were doing but he told them to stop the car so he could get out because he didn’t want to get into trouble.  They stopped, let him out and drove off.  Five minutes later a devastating accident occurred and both of his friends were killed instantly!  This is a time of joy and yet much sadness, but it’s a “real” reminder…we never know what the next minute may bring.  Live it to fullest~~and when it’s tough, call on our Father and Lord Jesus, they’ll be right by your side!
